A short guide to Fox Calls, Crow Calls, Stoat Calls and Squirrel Calls

As we move towards Spring many predators are on the move and others become territorial so it is important for Gamekeepers and the like to take advantage of this. As well as the use of traps such as multi-catch cages, Larsen Traps and Tunnel Traps the Shotgun, Rifle and Air Rifle can be very effective providing you can get your quarry within range. To help get your quarry in range for a safe shot and clean kill the competent use of a call is all but essential so here we will introduce a few calls to you.

TC87 Crow Call

The Haydel’s TC87 Triple Tone Crow is, in our opinion, the best mouth Crow Call on the UK market and is so simple to use all but a total “numpty” could call Crow’s with one. Click here to learn more or order your Crow Call.

GHC Fox Call

The Haydel’s GHC is our 4-in-1 Fox Call and it replicates a variety of Fox enticing Calls including the Rabbit Distress, Hare Distress and a Mouse Squeak for that close in work. A versatile Fox Call that work’s very well even on those hard to call old timers. To learn more about the Haydels’ GHC Fox Call Click Here.

The Haydel’s MSP98 is an excellent little Squeaker that works well close when foxes are close in and it also makes for a top class Stoat Call. This is a very popular Stoat Call with our local Gamekeepers on Wild Bird shoots. Click here for details of the MSP98

The DS85 is Haydel’s Squirrel Call and these calls are regarded as essential equipment by Air Rifle Shooters. To learn more click here.

 Call Lanyard

Last but not least you should keep your calls safe and in the best possible condition with one of our call lanyards. The choice includes the Double Call lanyard, the Triple Call Lanyard and the Quad Call Lanyard.

Fox Call & Stoat Call – Primos Raspy Coaxer.

The Raspy produces a rabbit distress call and a mouse squeak that can be used as a Fox Call and a Stoat Call

As a Fox Call blowing through the main barrel of the call produces a long range and high volume rabbit distress call. Using the small side valve produces mice and rodent calls which is good for getting foxes in a little closer and we have also found it makes a great Stoat Call.

Grey Squirrel Call – Primos Squirrel Buster.

As the name suggests the Primos Squirrel Buster is a Squirrel Call and I am told that with practice it is very effective.

I have to be honest and admit that I have never tried a Squirrel Call but I can pass on some of the feedback I have had from customers. Air Rifle Shooters are avid Squirrel hunters and they find the Squirrel Call to be an excellent tool for stopping Squirrels and also for bringing them into range. I have had reports of customers shooting up to 2 dozen Squirrels in a day with the help of a call. It seems that Squirrels come to the call because they are curious and at other times because they are aggressive and territorial. Practice the “chatter” this seems to get their attention and this is when they make a rapid approach with the intention of pushing you out of their territory.

Customers have passed on the following tips:

  • Air Rifle users can tape the call to the side of their stock, this makes it easy and convenient to use with minimal movement,
  • Remove the bellows from the call so you can blow into the call, this makes an excellent Fox Call.

Crow Call – Primos Power Crow

Crows are very susceptible to good calling during the early breeding season when they become very territorial. Rooks and Jackdaws are also good to call and provide excellent year round sport over decoys on their feeding grounds.

Primos claim that the Power Crow is the loudest Crow Call in the world and initially I have to say I had doubts over this claim. However, field tests have demonstrated to me that it is the decibels and pitch that do the work for this call and it sounds as loud at 100 yards as it does at 10 yards. We have a rookery at the bottom of our field and my little lad spent hours in the back garden trying to call Rooks but what amazed me was when he walked down to the wood and using the call 120 yards away from me it still had fantastic volume and it worked!

Is the call easy to use? Well my little lad could blow one with very little effort when he was 5 and he has always been able to bring birds into shooting range with his Power Crow Call.
